Market Wrap-up
Inflation Nation: The much anticipated April PCE data was in line with expectations. Headline PCE MOM gain of 0.3% versus estimates of 0.3% and YOY gain of 2.7% versus estimates of 2.7%. The Core (ex food and energy) PCE increased by 0.2% versus estimates of 0.3% and YOY it increased by 2.8% versus estimates of 2.8%.
Incomes and Spending: Personal Incomes matched expectations in April, up 0.3%. However Personal Spending was a slight miss downward at 0.2% versus estimates of 0.3%.
Rosie the Riveter: Yikes, the May Chicago PMI continues to be in a freefall. It contracted down to a 35.4 reading which was even worse than April’s 37.9 level.
April inflation generally as expected, inflation on the core expected at +0.2% and reported +0.2% but down month/month from March at +0.3%; year/year +2.8% as thought and matched March’s year/year inflation. Inflation still at 2.8% with the Fed standing firm that it has to fall to 2.0%. Most comments we heard today were inflation not likely to get to 2.0% this year, but confidence building inflation isn’t likely to increase from the present level. The core month/month the smallest increase since last December. April personal spending softened, driven by high rates, credit card debit increasing and debt delinquencies increasing.
