Market Wrap-up

Taking it to the House: June New Home Sales were low at 627K AND prices dropped.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Initial Weekly Jobless Claims fell to 217K versus estimates of 227K but Continuing Claims rose from 1.951M to 1.955M.

Report Card: The Chicago Fed’s National Activity Index rose from -0.28 to -0.10, beating the estimates of -0.16.

Flash it: The preliminary Flash S&P Manufacturing PMI dropped from 52 to 49.5, while the Services PMI increased from 52.9to 55.2.

Central Bank Palooza: The ECB “paused” their rate lowering trend and kept their rates unchanged.

On Deck for Tomorrow: Durable Goods Orders.

Lower weekly jobless claims this morning sent interest rates higher, the 10 went from 4.39% to 4.44%, MBS prices at 9:30 -13 bps frm yesterday. Looking at lender prices the market this morning was very soft, day-to-day prices from the few lenders we track declined about 25 bps frm 9:30 yesterday. The decline in claims when measured in minutes suggest the Fed has less reason to cut rates even though the Fed isn’t expected to lower rates until at least Sept and that is a SWAG and depends on each economic report and the impact that tariffs may have.

The S&P Global US Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.5 into contraction down from a 37 month high in May. The reading marked the first deterioration in factory business conditions since December, as production growth eased and new orders declined for the first time this year. In addition, both employment and inventories of purchases also fell for the first time since April. After weekly claims declined at 8:30 the 9:45 am release brought back the idea the Fed would lower rates soon; as far as I am concerned neither data point this morning does anything to change uncertainty about rate cuts.

Tomorrow the only data is June durable goods orders; new orders expected to have declined 11.0% from May’s 16.4% increase. Ex-vehicles sales expected +0.1% frm May’s 0.5%. Core capital orders estimates +0.2% rm May’s +1.7%. The report does have the potential to move markets depending how the release varies frm estimates.

As we hit the send button, according to his schedule Pres. Trump is visiting the Fed’s offices, likely scoping the huge cost overruns on the Fed’s $2.8B upgrade that is said to be $400 mil over budget

Investors and traders preparing for next week. Next week a lot of data, and the FOMC meeting. The FOMC concludes its two-day meeting next Wednesday. Tuesday July consumer confidence index. Wednesday July ADP private jobs, advance Q2 GDP. Thursday June PCE inflation data, personal income, and spending, Q2 employment cost index. Friday July employment report, July ISM manufacturing index, the July U. of Michigan consumer sentiment index; AND it’s the tariff deadline.  That PCE and July employment are released after the FOMC makes its policy statement less interesting.
