MARKETS WRAP UP

“Knowledge is the Key to Success….Timing is the Key to Profits”

Friday, July 24, 2026 4:00 PM

Interest rates improved a little today, crude oil traded lower. It has been a nasty week for interest rates and oil increased with Iran tensions heating up. The US has launched attacks everyday for the last two weeks with no progress.

Trump today talking a major attack, much larger than what has been happening. Today Pakistan stepped up attempting to get the two sides back to the negotiations, reportedly China may also be involved. How many times has Pakistan tried and failed? It isn’t likely this attempt will work either; it seems every time the US is about to bring down the hammer Pakistan appears which cools rhetoric down and lets Iran regroup.

Next week on Wednesday the FOMC policy statement and Warsh’s press conference. Markets do not expect the Fed to act next week, we hold the Fed should increase the FF rate next week. However it will send a strong message the Fed is more fearful about inflation that currently thought leading to additional rte increases. At current levels interest rates have already discouinted 25 bps increase in the FF rate.

Will Trump unleash US military might? He is reportedly meeting with his cabinet and military leaders to assess the outcome, success, crude oil, stocks and interest rates. The weekend is an appropriate time given markets are closed allowing reflection rather than excessive initial reactions.

Next week’s calendar: the headlines are the FOMC meeting and PCE inflation data. Monday June durable goods orders, 2 yr and 5 yr note auctions. Tuesday FOMC meeting begins, May Case/Shiler home price index, July consumer confidence index frm the Conference Board, 7 yr note auction. Wednesday FOMC decision and Warsh’s press conference, MBA mortgage applications. Thursday Q2 advance GDP, Jue personal income and spending, June PCE inflation, weekly jobless claims. Friday July Chiago purchasing mgrs. index, Final July U. of Michigan consumer sentiment index.

This Week: 10 yr note yield +13 bps, 2 yr note +15 bps. FNMA MBS prices -84 bps. The DJIA -99, NASDAQ -544, S&P -46.  Crude oil +$7.67, Gold +$42.00. The dollar index +0.73, bitcoin +69.

Mortgage Rates Recover Modestly From Long-Term Highs
Fri, Jul 24, 2026 3:06PM
If you’re just tuning in, mortgage rates had a rough day yesterday on top of a rough week overall. The result was the highest 30yr fixed rate in over a year with our index moving up to 6.85%. As has been and continues to be the case, rate momentum has been strongly correlated with oil/gas price momentum. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see rates moving lower on a day where oil prices recovered from their recent highs. That’s the good news, and it brings the rate index down 0.04% to 6.81%.  The not-so-good news is that 6.81% is still the highest in more than a year apart from yest… (read more)

Token Support in Bonds After Oil Drops Overnight
Fri, Jul 24, 2026 9:56AM
It’s a straightforward morning in the bond market. We’re not seeing any of the sorts of “unseen hand” trading that accounted for the timing of yesterday’s pre-market weakness. We simply have oil prices erasing about half of yesterday’s rise. Bond yields are trying their best to be able to say the same, but they’re not recovering quite as much as oil. It… (read more)
